Use Items from another project to study this high school
experiment.
What
cleans the enamel on your teeth the best?
You can do the experiment from the 8th grade science
project and use the teeth from that experiment to test this one.
Once you have the stained teeth now you want to
determine how you can get them cleaned and that is where your
high school science project experiment comes in to play.
You will probably need to get teeth stained by one
substance. If you have found that coffee stained the worst
then stain 4 or 5 teeth with coffee. You will want a
standard in this project and that is the coffee stained teeth.
You will then test to see which substance may remove the coffee
stain most efficiently.
Get these items together:
Toothpaste
Baking Soda
Tomato Juice
Vinegar
Hydrogen peroxide
Place each of these items in a small cup or bowl.
The baking soda you will need to mix with a small amount of
water to make a paste.
Place each tooth in a solution. You will need
to put the tooth inside or smear the paste around the tooth with
the toothpast and baking soda.
Now let them sit overnight. and in the morning remove
from each liquid and pat dry with paper towels and place in a
row for observation.
Make notes about which tooth looks cleaner and why.
Was your hypothesis correct in which cleaner would
work the best. If not what did you discover about the
solution that may have worked better?
This is considered a high school experiment because
it has more preparation in staining the teeth and then cleaning.
Chemistry type of experiment:
This will probably take a little critical thinking to
determine the chemical reaction and items in each material used.
Take a piece of copy paper and draw 5 or 6 lines down the
paper evenly spaced apart with a ball point pen.
Take another piece of copy paper and using a marker do the
same thing. Use a washable marker.
Take yet another piece of copy paper and use a crayon to draw
the same 5 or 6 lines down the paper length
Last one on this paper use a pencil to draw your lines.
Now get these items from your kitchen or bathroom cabinets:
toothpaste
hairspray
window cleaner
simple green
dishwashing liquid
an eraser
Using a little bit of each item above put a small amount of
each line you had drawn on each piece of paper.
So on the first paper you have 6 lines. Put toothpast
on one line, hairspray on one line, window cleaner on another
line, simple green on the 4th line, dishwashing liquid on the
5th line and use an eraser on the last line. You do not
need to totally cover the lines with these items just spray or
put a small amount on each one.
Set your papers on the counter and go away for about 30
minutes. When you come back make a visual observation of
each one. You may need to wipe the toothpast and
dishwashing liquid off. See if any of them had an effect
on removing that mark.
If any did which one was effective or the most effective.
What type of chemical reaction could have happened to cause
this?
Did you notice the hairspray probably removed the ball point
pen ink?
What other interesting finds did you have?
