Allelopathy

Some plants prevent other plants form growing too close.  They make special chemicals.  Sweet potatoes contain many of these allelochemicals.  Some plants release this chemical from their roots.  Nearby plants absorb this from the soil and die.  Other kinds of allelochemicals can slow down or stop a plant's photosynthesis
